One of Hollywood and country music’s most beloved power couples has officially turned the page on their marriage, and now Nicole Kidman is finally sharing how she’s doing after her Tennessee split from Keith Urban.

The Oscar-winning actress recently opened up about the breakup during a wide-ranging interview, offering the first real glimpse into her mindset since filing for divorce from the country superstar last fall. The legal paperwork for the couple’s separation was filed in Tennessee, where the pair had long built a home life together in Nashville while balancing careers that kept them traveling the globe, per PEOPLE.

For fans who spent nearly two decades watching their relationship play out as one of Hollywood’s more stable love stories, the divorce came as a shock. Kidman, however, seems focused less on the breakup itself and more on the future and the family she shares with Urban.

When asked how she’s doing in the months since the split, the actress offered a calm but thoughtful response. “I am, because I’m always going to be moving toward what’s good,” she said. It wasn’t exactly a deep dive into the emotional details of the breakup, but it did reveal a clear boundary. Kidman made it obvious she intends to keep the most personal aspects of the divorce private.

“What I’m grateful for is my family and keeping them as is and moving forward. That’s that,” she explained. “Everything else I don’t discuss out of respect. I’m staying in a place of, ‘We are a family,’ and that’s what we’ll continue to be. My beautiful girls, my darlings, who are suddenly women.”

That sentiment makes sense when you consider the couple’s history. Kidman and Urban first crossed paths back in 2005 and tied the knot the following year. Over the course of their marriage, they welcomed two daughters, Sunday Rose, now 17, and Faith Margaret, 15.

For years, the family balanced life between the entertainment worlds of Hollywood and country music, with Nashville serving as a home base. But according to the divorce filing submitted in Davidson County, Tennessee, the relationship had ultimately reached a breaking point.

The legal documents cited “marital difficulties and irreconcilable differences” as the reason Kidman moved forward with divorce proceedings. The separation was finalized earlier this year, with Kidman receiving primary custody of their daughters at her Nashville home. Both parents will continue to share responsibility for major decisions involving the girls.

“It’s weird, because in the beginning and years later, I always saw them smiling together. I would have never thought they would get a divorce,” one person commented. “I wonder if Keith Urban cheated on her! I always thought that they were happy!!” said another. “Why does she feel she needs to speak out or justify anything… just move on,” a third person chimed in.

Despite the personal upheaval, Kidman appears ready to step back into the spotlight professionally. In fact, she admitted that the past year had been something of a quiet period for her.

“Well, not last year. I was quiet. I had other things going on. I was in my shell,” she said when asked if every year feels like “the year of Nicole Kidman.” But that phase may be ending soon. “Now I’m in a place of saying, ‘2026. Here we go.’ I have Practical Magic with Sandra Bullock. I’ll be in full witch mode.”

Still, career ambitions aren’t the only thing on her mind right now. Kidman made it clear that motherhood remains front and center in her priorities. When discussing whether she might eventually move into directing, she admitted that the timing simply isn’t right yet.

“There are still things I want to do as an actor… but you just need to get your children to a certain age to be able to do it. Right now is not the time for me to do that; I’ve got to take care of these kids.”

In other words, even though her Tennessee marriage may have ended, Nicole Kidman seems determined to keep the most important part of that chapter intact, the family she and Urban built together.
