Fans hoping to see Buffy Summers back in action just got some bad news straight out of California. Sarah Michelle Gellar has confirmed that the planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival is no longer happening, bringing an abrupt end to what many viewers hoped would be a long-awaited return to Sunnydale.

The update came directly from Sarah Michelle Gellar herself, who decided to break the news personally rather than let rumors swirl. The actress, who became a household name thanks to the supernatural hit series, shared the disappointing announcement with fans online. And judging by her message, the news wasn’t easy to deliver, per TVLine.

“So I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy New Sunnydale,” Gellar explained.

The scrapped project had been gaining buzz because it wasn’t simply a remake of the original show. Instead, the concept introduced a new slayer named Nova, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, while Gellar’s iconic character would step back into the story as a mentor figure.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot Called Off

For longtime fans, the idea felt like a respectful way to expand the universe while still honoring the original heroine who helped define late-1990s television. The proposed revival also had some impressive creative backing. Academy Award-winning director Chloe Zhao was behind the pilot episode, something that reportedly played a big role in convincing Gellar to return at all.

The actress had previously been hesitant about revisiting the character that made her famous. After the show wrapped in 2003, Gellar spent years distancing herself from the role, making it clear that she didn’t want to jump into a reboot just for nostalgia’s sake.

But Zhao’s enthusiasm apparently changed her mind. “I want to thank Chloe Zhao because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots,” Gellar wrote.

Even though the project ultimately didn’t move forward, the experience reminded her how meaningful the character still is to audiences. She acknowledged that the legacy of Buffy goes far beyond just one TV show.

“Thanks to Chloe, I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means not only to me but to all of you,” Gellar added.

Fans Weight In

Once the news hit social media, reactions poured in from fans who had been eager to revisit the world of vampires, demons, and high-school drama that made the original series such a cultural phenomenon.

“Man, it took decades to convince Sarah Michelle Gellar to do this reboot. Then she agrees because no one less than Chloé Zhao takes on the development and direction of the pilot… and in the end, the whole thing falls through. What a trip,” one person stated. “Why get our hopes up with a Buffy reboot just to tank it before it gets premiered,” said another.

While the revival is officially off the table for now, there may still be a small glimmer of hope. Reports suggest Hulu remains interested in the broader Buffy franchise and could explore other projects tied to the supernatural universe in the future.

Still, for fans hoping to see Sarah Michelle Gellar stake vampires again anytime soon, this latest update out of California feels like a serious heartbreak.
